Itinerary

Meeting Place

Base of Operations in Loreto

Loreto, Baja California Sur

Pre-trip meeting the evening before trip. Paddle around Carmen Island in 8 days plus 2 more on Danzante Island, or for weather flexibility.

Day 1:

Ride 20 mins in our taxi-van from your hotel to launch. Practice the magic of making a big pile of gear disappear into hatches. Bond with our kayaks and each other as we paddle off to Carmen Island with a spectacular view of the Sierra La Giganta mountains. 6-8nm.

Day 2:

Keep an eye out for bighorn sheep on the cliffs above and colorful fish below if the water is calm. The west side of Carmen has some rock hopping and a few caves in the dark volcanic rock. It also has great snorkeling and sunsets over the mountains. Approx. 9nm.

Day 3:

Start around the long, exposed north end of the island. Got the feeling that you're really headed out there? You are! Camp in a hidden beach, tucked behind a turn of the coastline pocked with sea caves. It's arguably Carmen's most beautiful beach, with turquoise water and white limestone cliffs. 8nm

Day 4:

Tackle the most exposed NE point of the island and enjoy a most colorful expression of geology and a view to the open horizon. Few landings provide haven here, so enjoy the ride! Camp down the beach from Loreto National Park’s only ghost town at the old salt mine. 13nm.

Day 5:

Stretch your legs with a walk past the old salt works. Paddle out to an shallow shipwreck a mile offshore and tie the kayaks up to a buoy for a unique snorkeling adventure.

Day 6:

Partway down the island we restock water from a spring-fed cistern. End another rewarding day at Arroyo Blanco, a sand/pebble beach between white cliffs sprinkled with fossil shells. Good snorkeling here too, and spectacular views from the clifftop. 8nm.

Day 7:

Finish the length of Carmen Island and enjoy a camp on Punta Baja, almost completely surrounded by sea. See the western mountains again. Seabirds populate the offshore rocks as the tide drops. Blue footed boobies, pelicans, terns and cormorants jostle for the best perches. 6nm.

Day 8:

Celebrate the completion of Carmen's perimeter and cross to Danzante, land of geologic poetry. Purple ash, jumbles of unsorted textures and colors in tilted layers of volcanic origin with dikes burnt vertically and white-trunked trees stuck randomly like wayward birthday candles. 3-9nm.

Day 9:

Explore Danzante's coast and nature trails. In addition to cacti and desert flowers, we've seen cardinals, hummingbirds in the nest, gila woodpeckers, 2 scorpions wrestling, a pair of rattlers battling over a mate, frigates soaring over us all, and whales from the vista. Fine snorkeling too! 8nm

Day 10:

Cross back to the beach where we started. Unpack and discover that can of roast peppers you'd been looking for all week. 4-6nm. Cold beverages and lunch on the beach. Warm showers in town, and memories for a lifetime!

Carmen Island Journey, Mexico

At Sea Kayak Baja Mexico we are passionate about paddling, and it shows in our gear selection: sporty British-style single kayaks, mostly Nigel Dennis (SKUK) with alternate options and doubles available if preferred. High-end fiberglass and carbon Werner paddles, fine Beale Greenland paddles, Kokatat and similar life jackets and Seals skirts are included. Many outdoor enthusiasts bring their own camping gear, but you may also rent a Hubba Hubba tent, Therm-a-Rest mattress, and Helinox beach chair on expeditions such as this Carmen Island Journey.

What Guests Are Saying

I highly recommend Sea Kayak Baja Mexico. Everything about this experience was superior to the 3 previous enjoyable sea kayak trips that I have done with other solid companies in Baja. Our leaders were gifted instructors and knowledgeable naturalist guides. The equipment was all top of the line and well maintained.
