Overview

The Nahanni River “Classic” is a two-week canoeing trip that is the perfect opportunity to see the highlights of this remote, pristine, alpine river valley. You will discover a mountainous wonderland with breathtaking canyons, a majestic waterfall, diverse wildlife, fun Class I and II non-technical whitewater, and interesting day hikes. This expedition will become one of your greatest shared family experiences – and the stories will be recounted for years to come.
Canada's first UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Nahanni is definitely one of the world’s best canoeing rivers. There will be time at the beginning of the trip to practice and hone our whitewater paddling skills in calmer yet swift-moving water before journeying through the gorgeous canyon sections further downstream. Each night we make camp by the river's edge, sharing an evening campfire, while watching the long evening twilight shift the colours of the surrounding hillsides and cliffs. Beginning at Rabbitkettle Lake (Gahnîhthah Mįe - home to stunning tufa mounds), paddlers descend the South Nahanni River, stopping to camp at the iconic Virginia Falls (Náįlįcho), twice the height of Niagara Falls. Onward, paddlers will experience the thrill of big waves and swifter currents through a series of truly spectacular canyons progressing to the Mackenzie Lowlands and the confluence of the Liard River at Nahanni Butte (Ttenáágó).
