Overview

The Coppermine River follows the treeline from the central Barren Lands in Canada's Northwest Territories to Nunavut at the Arctic Ocean. Renowned for its wildlife and fascinating history, it has been designated a Canadian Heritage River. This 14-day whitewater trip starts with moderate rapids, lakes, and a lazy river current, picking up speed through rolling hills, canyons and towering cliffs. Our last camp is at Bloody Falls, within sight of the Arctic Ocean.
One of the great Canadian wilderness rivers, we'll re-live the route travelled by early European explorers, Samuel Hearne and Sir John Franklin, as they mapped the great north and met the people who lived there. Common wildlife sightings include caribou and muskoxen grazing along the shores, and nesting golden eagles and gyrfalcons. The Arctic char fishing can be exceptional. The trees dwindle until we paddle onto the Barrens beneath the midnight sun. Our last camp is at Bloody Falls, in sight of the ocean. Finally, we'll paddle to the sea. We'll then have a little time to wander through the coastal Inuit hamlet of Kugluktuq and enjoy a night there in a hotel bed before our flights home.
