Overview

Three rivers— The Silverberry, Ravensthroat and Redstone connect to form a single navigable ribbon of azure water through the wild landscape of the Mackenzie Mountains, flowing from the backs of some of the highest peaks in the Northwest Territories all the way to the Mackenzie River. This river journey is perfect for rafting as its swift current and fun class 2-3+ rapids, paired with epic mountain scenery, will keep a smile on your face the whole way downstream!
Tucked away between Nahanni National Park to the south and The Keele River to the north lies a vast watershed shrouded in mystery, almost unknown to the outside world. The mountain ranges watching over the Silverberry/Ravensthroat Rivers have witnessed only a handful of river travellers in recent, modern history. In 2017, Canoe North Adventures pioneered this previously unpaddled route through the Mackenzie Mountains and were stunned by the immense beauty of this untouched mountain landscape. Five beautiful canyons that pierce the sky, equal the beauty of the Nahanni. Kilometers of frolicking Class 2-3 whitewater, framed by mountains, create an unforgettable expedition opportunity. Add in epic hiking, two hot springs to soak in and an abundance of wildlife, one can easily see why this watershed has been kept secret for so long. It is simply the best whitewater rafting experience the Northwest Territories has to offer.

Meeting Place

Canoe North Adventures Lodge & Outfitting Centre

Norman Wells, Northwest Territories

The trip begins in Norman Wells, NWT where you will stay the night at our full service lodge and prep for your trip. the next day a charter aircraft will fly you into the mountains to start your journey down the Silverberry. On the 14th day, you finish the river and end up back in Norman Wells.

Day 1:

Depart for the river by float plane. Land at the beautiful Coates Lake, where a smaller aircraft will shuttle the group to a smaller lake only 300m from the Silverberry River's edge. After the whole group has arrived, the short portage is completed and camping is by the river for the night.

Day 2:

Layover Day to hike up a spectacular ridge alongside the river, gaining a birds eye view of the valley below. Relax when returning to camp.

Day 3:

Its time to paddle some whitewater! A small short canyon is the first challenge, followed by kilometers of fun, splashy class 2+ waves. The scenery in this section is absolutely epic and your head will be on a swivel looking around!

Day 4:

The river slows down today and braids for miles and miles. Kick back and relax as the scenery continues to dazzle. Camping tonight is at an A+ spectacular spot!

Day 5:

A short burst of whitewater starts off the day as you pop through the narrow and exhilarating second canyon, before returning to the braided channel of the day before. In the afternoon the river narrows again and provides some more whitewater fun.

Day 6:

Feel the power of the river, as the combined flow of the Ravensthroat and Silverberry make for some fast kilometers! Camping is near a beautiful tributary where the bulltrout are waiting your cast.

Day 7:

Start the day by exploring Ravensthroat Hotsprings, a sprawling tufa complex that has truly piping hot water! After returning to the rafts, its time to face Ravensthroat Canyon and its fantastic whitewater. A couple of hard strokes and you are through!

Day 8:

Some big whitewater corners are followed by Redstone Canyon. With walls over 400m tall, this is the most spectacular canyon on the river and has some great whitewater to boot! After successfully navigating the canyon, we descend to the "Big Bend" where the river makes 90 turn to the north.

Day 9:

Layover Day to enjoy this special part of the river. Hike to a nearby peak, or relax in camp.

Day 10:

Gorge day! Here the Redstone River has cut its way through a mountain range, creating a spectacular gorge over 800m tall. The river is fast and fun through this section- you can easily see the land dropping away below you! great whitewater and towering cliffs make this a fantastic day of rafting.

Day 11:

The Redstone begins its march to the Mackenzie river, and begins to braid again for the day. After a big push we finally leave the mountains behind. Camping is on a gravel bar somewhere in "the Splits".

Day 12:

The last rapids of the trip thrill you as you descend ever downwards, and the cliffs of the foothills are still quite the view to look at! End the day at the mouth of the Redstone, and marvel at the journey you have just completed.

Day 13:

A plane comes to the river in the morning to whisk you back to civilization. A final night celebration is in order for your experience! Celebrate your achievement in style at our full service lodge & B&B.
