Overview

Among whitewater enthusiasts, The Middle Fork of the Salmon River is second to none. Raft 105 miles of free-flowing river that drops 3000 feet through Idaho's remote and extraordinary Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness, the largest designated wilderness area in the entire lower 48 U.S. States. Fun rapids, hot springs, Native rock art, superb hiking trails, blue-ribbon fishing and spectacular mountain scenery all combine for a magical, life-changing journey.
Natural and untamed, Idaho's Middle Fork is protected by Congress as one of America’s first Wild and Scenic Rivers. It has shaped its course through a rugged and diverse landscape. There are no roads leading to its banks and little remains of man’s brief presence other than prehistoric pictographs and dilapidated log cabins. The whitewater rapids are constant and fun, raging in late spring and mellowing as the summer progresses. We launch our boats into the Salmon River nearly 6,000 feet above sea level and immediately enter an enchanted forest of fir and spruce. The river is steep, shallow, and narrow and we careen through boulder-choked rapids. With each passing mile, side creeks tumble into the Middle Fork's clear sparkling water and deepen the flow around our boats. The whitewater rapids are frequent and challenging on the Middle Fork and guides speak their names with reverence.

Stanley or Salmon, Idaho

Explore Idaho's free flowing, wild and scenic, Middle Fork Salmon River! Over the course of 5 or 6 days you'll raft exciting rapids, camp riverside, enjoy freshly cooked meals daily, and create memories that last a lifetime on one of America's most sought after stretches of river.

Day 1:

The rafting begins! We'll be transported to the river launch point where there will be a brief safety orientation from your guides. Today we'll raft 10-15 miles of steep, exciting, fast paced whitewater through a narrow part of the canyon.

Day 2:

Enjoy plenty of fun rapids as the river continues its descent. We will explore the old miner's camp at Powerhouse Rapids, and stop for a soak in the Sunflower Flat Hot Springs.

Day 3:

Today we'll stop and view some pictographs from the Native Americans Tukudeka, or Sheepeaters who lived in the canyon until 1870. After that we'll raft down the quickly widening canyon as the river starts to slow down. Enjoy the evening with a hike to Loon Creek Hot Spring.

Day 4:

Another day of incredible rafting among the Rocky Mountain Scenery. We'll stop at Hospital Bar hot springs before continuing our descent to Tappan Rapids.

Day 5:

We'll maneuver the most technical rapid on the river today, Haystack Rapid which signifies the start of Inpassable Canyon. We'll stop for a hike at Waterfall Creek, then later downstream stop to hike to the infamous Veil Falls.

Day 6:

For our last day on the water, we'll paddle past the confluence where the Middle Fork meets the Main Salmon. A point in the canyon with deep history. After a few more miles floating downstream we will reach our ending point where we will take out and be transported to nearby accommodations.

Middle Fork Salmon River Rafting

Services of our talented adventure consultants and professional guides, all meals/beverages (including beer and wine), all rafting/camping gear, and transportation to/from river meeting points.
In addition to the sweep boat that carries all the camping gear, we use two other kinds of river craft. The traditional raft is a 16-foot self-bailing, oar-powered raft which a guide controls with two large oars. (Many companies use 18-22 foot rafts, which take a good deal of the fun out of the rapids.) We also offer smaller 14-foot paddle rafts. Four to six people paddle while a guide steers. Many people enjoy rotating between both crafts during a trip. On the few trips we operate with less than 13 guests, we may not have enough people to support a paddle raft.  ROW provides the camping equipment including sleeping pads, sleeping bags, and tents, dry bags, and all food and beverages.

What Guests Are Saying

One of the best vacations I've ever had. Stunning scenery. Loved being on and learning about the river, the history, the geology. The guides are awesome stewards; their sheer enjoyment and knowledge of and care for the river gives me hope for the future. And they were a blast. ROW's attention to detail is superb.
