Overview

Go gaga over Glaciers and Grizzlies! This unique trip is all about the incredible glacier views, the historic salmon run and the abundant life supported by its icy water. A first descent for Elements Adventure Company and we’re looking for adventurous folks to paddle through the Coast Mountains and into the rainforest of Southeast Alaska – the heart of Alaska’s Tongass National Forest and the traditional land of the Taku River Tlingit.
This trip is a rare opportunity to canoe a river from it’s start, all the way to the end in the Pacific Ocean. The Taku starts out as a small-medium volume river, with clear creeks with spawning salmon dotting the shoreline. The river here is fast and continuous, requiring good skills to navigate the many wood hazards in the braided channels. Once the river leaves the interior and enters the land of the glaciers, it slows and widens, with icy water feeding it from the adjacent glacier melt. You will almost certainly see grizzlies (aka. Alaskan Brown Bears in these parts!) fattening up during this time of year. Near the delta at the river’s end, we’ll navigate the many shallow mud and sand flats to find clear passage to the Pacific Ocean, before braving the rugged coastline of the Taku Inlet to Juneau, AK. It is for canoeists with intermediate moving water canoeing experience and rescue skills and a keen sense for adventure.

What Guests Are Saying

Charles runs an excellent organization from end to end. The trip routes are on gorgeous rivers that can accommodate a reasonably wide range of paddling skills. More advanced paddlers have plenty of scope to play and push their skills; safety is always paramount.
