Overview

A 15-day challenging and exploratory descent, the crystal-clear Stone Knife is a little-known high alpine tributary of the Mountain River. Starting at an alpine lake at the headwaters of an un-named creek, we expect to portage and line our canoes to the Stone Knife, which drops 300m over 80km. Joining the Mountain River just downstream of the second of the five canyons, the group will enjoy 170km of more whitewater fun along Black Feather's "Guide Favourite" river.
The Stone Knife will be an exploratory first descent for Black Feather. We are aware of only one small group having ever paddled the river from the planned access point. The water course is sometimes braided, and sometimes a single channel, with class I & II rapids and perhaps a few mini-canyons to be scouted carefully before running. It passes through the Ten Stone and Shattered Ranges, offering striking new viewpoints for hiking and otherwise exploring. The Mountain River is Black Feather's “Guides’ Choice” as the best wilderness canoeing river in Canada. Awesome alpine scenery bathed in constantly-changing colours, dramatic canyons, exciting Class I to III whitewater, and non-stop current – all in a pristine wilderness setting – make this trip a “must” for experienced paddlers. Wildlife such as Dall sheep, caribou, wolves, and bears can be found in the river valley.
