Overview

150 km of pure whitewater fun, the Broken Skull River starts high in the Mackenzie Mountains and boasts excellent class 1 and 2 whitewater, great hiking and truly untravelled wilderness. Once at the Nahanni, canoes and paddling gear are cached to hike into beautiful Glacier Lake and up to the Cirque of the Unclimbables, a 5- or 6-day off-river backpacking adventure. Our last days’ paddle will take us to Nahanni National Park’s Rabbitkettle Lake to fly home.
The Broken Skull River is located in one of Canada’s newest national parks: Nááts’ihch’oh. The river is a little-known tributary of the fabled Tehjeh Deé (the South Nahanni River). This 17-day trip is suitable for paddlers with previous canoe camping and whitewater experience but advanced whitewater skills are not required. Participants should have reasonable fitness for hiking and carrying a pack with personal and group gear in moderately rough terrain with elevation gain, and time to explore this additional incredible and out-of-the-way highlight of Nahanni National Park Reserve. Those wishing for an extended paddling-only experience should consider our Broken Skull-Nahanni Combo trip.
